Third time’s a charm, it’s a common saying, and in some cases it’s how the story goes. Robin Gemperle had everything aligned on the 10th edition of the Transcontinental Race and took home the victory - exactly on his third attempt. How much determination and discipline does one need to have to dare to try again? What lies behind reaching a major goal?

Since 2022, Robin has been committed to one particular goal. After finishing 8th in his first Transcontinental Race, he discovered the calling of ultra-distance racing and wanted to be a part of it. He was not completely pleased with his 8th position and decided to try again and go for the win. In 2023, his second TCR attempt left him in second place, so he had to go home, revise and prepare even better for the following year’s edition.

This summer, leading up to the TCRNo10, Robin setup a strict training plan – reminiscing of his old pro athlete days – went deep into route planning, all to prepare him for the epic challenge ahead. The route from Roubaix, France to the last control point in Istanbul, Turkey covers such a mix of terrain -flat roads, mountain passes, gravel shortcuts - and riders are expected to encounter every sort of weather and temperature. It’s a challenge you need to be fully prepared for, both in body and mind. Riding such a distance on your own, unsupported, and with a clock that never stops, with the goal of being the first at the final control point, requires everything from you.

On the 21st of July 2024, more than 300 riders started their journey from Roubaix towards Istanbul, with the 4000km of solo riding in the plan. Facing every obstacle they might encounter on their way. Robin was the first to reach each of the four control – CP1 in Mangartsko Sedlo, Slovenia, CP2 in Bjelašnica, Bosnia, CP3 in Prevallë, Kosovo and the last control point before the finish line in Istanbul was in Çanakkale, Türkiye. Despite knee pain, fatigue and high temperatures, Robin fought through it all with a mindset of achieving the goal that’s been haunting him since 2022: to reach Istanbul as the number one.

Get enmeshed in Robin’s final preparations before the TCRNo10 win and dive into the mindset of a true ultra-distance champion.
