Loic Collomb Patton World Champion 2016

The steep and unforgiving north-east face of the Bec des Rosses, towering to 3233m above the popular Swiss ski resort of Verbier, is often considered the gatekeeper to the prestigious title of world champion on the Freeride World Tour. SCOTT has been a proud partner from the start and this year this legendary venue hosted the 21st edition of the world championship in the seminal event that is often credited as giving birth to the freeride movement.

The nearly four-month-long saga showcasing the finest up-and-coming ski talents came to a definitive close this weekend in Verbier. It took a while until Loic Collomb Patton’s victory sank in, but there was no doubt that his uncanny ability to charge lines at top speed as well as integrate new-school freestyle tricks has once again earned him the prestigious title of world champion.

The world champion male skier was ultimately determined this weekend from the highest overall scores after the penultimate stop in Haines, Alaska due to the cancellation of the category finals in Verbier. Stormy weather producing strong winds and low visibility barred riders from dropping into the face on two separate occasions. Nicolas Hales Wood, General Manager of the FWT told us that they decided to cancel the event after forecasts predicted sustained strong winds and snowfall preventing any viable competition date until the end of the allotted weather window on April 10th.

Before the bad weather came in, the ski women category was able to successfully finish. For our girls Jackie Paaso (US) and Arianna Tricomi (ITA) the season has been great and during Xtreme Verbier this did not change. It’s always exciting to watch Jackie’s (1st Place Xtreme, 2nd Place Overall) interpretation of a competition venue with her propensity for huge airs and big lines, which is exactly what earned her the gold medal today. Even though Arianna (5th Place Xtreme, 3rd Place Overall) had a bit of a struggle for this weekend's comp, her season has been more than impressive. She has not shown any hesitation and most of the time she has been the one setting the high level for the other ladies to try to reach.
