Santiago Island, Cape Verde

Mountain biking at its finest off the west coast of Africa

Discover a trail paradise unlike anywhere else
With only a 4-hour flight from Lisbon, mountain bikers will be especially heart-warmed in the winter season. December to June is the best time to set out along the old mountain paths and trails to explore the outstanding viewpoints, with unforgettable adventures. But also in the other months, biking on Cape Verde promises a very special experience! On the archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, off the west coast of Africa, temperatures are rarely below 20 degrees and rarely above 30 degrees - all year round. The group of islands is known for its volcanic peaks, deep valleys, and impressive rock formations, which are a unique backdrop for mountain bike tours.

Mountain bike tours for experienced riders
For conditioned and experienced bikers, the choice of trails is endless. Some of them lead over steep terrain and offer views of wild gorges and the spectacular mountain landscape. Curvy, demanding snaking trails link up with technical riding and flowy sections. Depending on the tour, the daily ascent varies from 300 - 800 meters and the descent from 600 - 1500 meters. A good level of fitness and good biking technique, even on difficult passages, are required. Steep climbs, tropical climatic conditions, frequent rhythm changes, and occasional carrying passages are all part of the experience. For people with a lower fitness level, but still technically experienced bikers, full-suspension e-mountain bikes (SCOTT Genius eRIDE and SCOTT Ransom eRIDE) are also available for most of the tours.

Pleasure tours
Of course, the program also includes several pleasure tours for guests with less riding experience. The more challenging sections are skipped or bridged with an additional pick-up. In addition to the guided mountain bike tours, there is a bike station which has been open since January 2024. Here you can book SCOTT Aspect 950 hardtail bikes for independent tours or guided tours on paved roads directly from the bike station.

Arrival to Cape Verde and further information
A daily arrival and departure are possible, also the length of stay can be determined by the guest themself. An example price calculation can be found under "trip summary.” The area is also home to countless water sports activities that can be performed around the hotel to provide an alternative program. Activities like diving, snorkelling, surfing, or fishing are a must on this wonderful island.

Cape Verde will linger in your thoughts
Music plays a central role in the daily life of the natives as an expression of their culturally rich identity. Those who get in touch will find a world of their own: between the melancholic Morna, made famous by Grammy Award winner Césaria Évora, to the cheerfully lively and rhythmic Funanà. Your Cape Verde experience will anyway linger in your thoughts and everyone will take a bit of "sodade" (loosely translated as "nostalgia") back home. Whether through the adventurous rides on the spectacular trails, or the encounter with the country and its culture, Cape Verde offers an unforgettable experience.

This trip is for experienced bikers who have a good command of the bike technique and are also prepared to take on short pushing passages if the topography of the trails and the safety of the bikers require this.

Program

Arrival and departure days are freely selectable, as well as the number of days of stay. The tour program includes different trail tours and is adapted according to the weather and guests.

For a stay of 6 days, 1 break day is provided in the middle of the stay. The tours are constantly being adapted.

The tour to Silverbeach and the “natural swimming pools” in the lava flow is a tour for all levels. More experienced riders will enjoy the 5 km long beach trail, which resembles a pump track, while beginners can enjoy the easy “beach trail” to Chao Bom. Here, the route leads uphill and downhill with an elevation gain of almost 140 meters over the cobblestone road to Ribeira da Prata and to a wonderful swim in the “Cuba Basin”, which we enjoy after the 10-kilometre trip. On the way back, the nature reserve for sea turtles, the black-sandy Silverbeach, offers further bathing fun. Depending on our mood, we return to Kingfisher via the beach trail or past the “Prison” - a place steeped in history from the time of the dictatorship in Portugal.

Cape Verde - King Fisher

We start directly at the Kingfisher hotel in Tarrafal and pedal partly on trails, partly on dirt tracks and partly on cobblestones towards the northernmost point of the island of Santiago. Here it's time for the magnificent, varied and flowing trail through the dry wilderness away from civilization. On the way to the unique beach of Fazenda, we come across the “national bird”, the Kingfisher, and, with a bit of luck, we can spot turtles and even whales in the bay.

On the way back, which starts with around 250 meters of elevation gain over a dirt road and tarmac, we can look forward to the spectacular finale with a crisp or a more leisurely trail down to Tarrafal Beach. Time for a few cool drinks!

Cape Verde - King Fisher

This tour begins with a shuttle to the Serra Malagueta Nature Park, which lies between the coastal town of Tarrafal and the mountain town of Assomada. Once at the top, the downhill begins.

If you want to enjoy the breathtaking view of the gorge and the Principal Lake, you have to make a few stops here. Descending on a smooth and curved-style path, sometimes flowy, sometimes more challenging with occasional steps and switchbacks, until you get closer to the valley floor.

Upon reaching the valley floor, the path becomes smoother again, and you'll ride through a sea of mango trees, banana plants, and sugarcane stalks until you reach the village of Principal.

Didn't get enough? If you feel like, you can take the coastal road and one or two surprise trails back to Tarrafal directly to the beach bar. Otherwise you can also hop in the pick-up.

Cape Verde - King Fisher

On this tour after a shuttle ride, we start by pedaling up a gravel road along the mountain ridge until we reach the beginning of our trail near the top. Prepare your camera because the views from both sides of the island are amazing!

Then the long and legendary single trail over an altitude difference of around 1500 meters along the mountain ridge begins – fast and fun!

There might be a few tricky spots, but overall, it's smooth and beautiful to ride. A truly superb trail!
On the way back, we will also have the option to visit the Rabelados, a religious community from the island of Santiago, where you can see the village and their artwork. It's now another 20 km and 500 m of difference in altitude back to Tarrafal along the coastal road; if you don't feel like it any more, hop on the shuttle.

Cape Verde - King Fisher

Well-built with numerous curves and a few tricky spots, but always flowing smoothly. This is Passo de Gato!

Many sections are characterized by a fascinating and seemingly untouched canyon scenery. The fast, twisty trail leads from the Serra Malagueta over challenging switchbacks to a high plateau with a unique view of the gorges below and the wild Atlantic Ocean on the horizon.

For a short stretch, you have to push and carry your bike up a steep snakingpath for around 80 meters; you are rewarded with spectacular views of the bay of Tarrafal and, on a clear day, the neighbouring islands of Maio and Fogo!

For dessert, a flowing trail through magnificent and, if necessary, healing aloe vera fields down to Tarrafal awaits us.

Cape Verde - King Fisher

This time we will ride on the West side of the island. Once we have caught the shuttle to the departure point, we climb up towards Monte Ramo, which has a pleasant incline. The path leads through steep terrain, with a breathtaking view down into the wild gorge and the bay of Tarrafal.

Speaking of breathtaking: this is how the following trail presents itself in terms of views and technical passages down to the village of Fundura. This is followed by a fun flow trail towards the west coast before we pedal back up the tarmac road to Figueras de Naus.

Riding along the ridge high above the gorge, we then descend until the trail suddenly leads into steep switchbacks directly to the valley floor. Here the bike has to be carried over short sections. We can then relax with a swim in the legendary “Natural Bassins” of Ribeira da Prata.

We return to the Kingfisher Hotel via a cobblestone road and beach trail.

Cape Verde - King Fisher

You don't have to be a pirate, but you do have to be a bit crazy to take on the exclusive trail on the west coast. The pick-up takes us to the starting point of Figueras das Naus at just under 700 m above sea level in around 20 minutes. The first kilometer takes us stress-free over an altitude difference of around 100 metres to the start of the downhill. Here, on the tricky, steep trail over hill and dale, thrills and adrenaline rushes are guaranteed - so be careful. Either way, you need to make a stop to enjoy the spectacular scenery in unspoiled nature! The downhill ends in the Ribeira do Pedroso river valley, where, thanks to the natural spring, a plant-rich oasis with a wide variety of animals from donkeys to monkeys awaits us.

After a refreshing swim in the Baia de Angrinha, the fisherman takes us on an adventurous boat trip back to Kingfisher Village - if you feel like it, you can take a fishing trip into the wild Atlantic.
